14. SOMEONE WILL ACTUALLY CHECK TO SEE WHETHER PESTICIDES ARE HARMFUL
The Department of Agriculture used to collect annual data on the use of chemicals on crops. The Bush administration reduced the frequency of the surveys, then their scope — and then finally chucked them altogether. The EPA and other government bodies charged with protecting the public have been relegated to purchasing data from private firms, which may or may not have their own agendas.
