Silence of the Sam

By DAVID S. BERNSTEIN  |  December 24, 2008

One reason for this suspicion is that City Hall does sometimes publish portions of council debates — on its intranet portal, the Hub.

In fact, it did so within about 24 hours of its lawyers rendering the decision that doing so is illegal.

Shortly after the Wednesday council meeting at which the ordinance was tabled, an item went up on the Hub. It reported that the council had rejected another Yoon effort — one that Menino had staunchly opposed, which would have resurrected the City Youth Activities Commission. The item, forwarded to the Phoenix, detailed some of the reasons that councilors gave for voting against it.

The item did not include, however, any of the reasons given for reviving the commission — which makes it look to some like one-sided propaganda aimed at the Boston city employees who access the portal.

Which gets back to the need to make the entire council meeting public. Yoon is considering other avenues to make his plan happen, perhaps by trying to change the state law.

Re: Silence of the Sam
Sam Yoon for mayor. Know next to nothing about him but I like this and anybody is better than the secrecy, one sided talk we are getting right now. Go SAM, Go! This law they are talking about from decades ago seems on it face to be illegal. I thought all city councils had to report their minutes? The mayor's against it but then he leaks? He either supports the law or doesn't, talk about trying to have your cake and eat it too.

It's no surprise that Martha Coakley has raised much of her money for her US Senate campaign from lawyers — that has been her professional and social circle for pretty much her entire adult life.

Martha Coakley should be plenty thankful for the holiday weekend. The polls suggest that, if nothing significant changes between now and the December 8 primary, she should handily claim the Democratic nomination for US Senate.

In recent weeks, Governor Deval Patrick has been receiving some of his best press in a long time — which is to say, he’s gotten very little coverage at all.
