Just imagine what we would do with France's first lady, Carla Bruni. The former model/singer/starfucker married President Nicolas Sarkozy in February after a quickie courtship. All eyes fell on her as she traveled the world with her new husband. She wore flats so as not to appear too tall or too trampy, and demure Christian Dior suits, accessorized by an even more demure half-smile. And, oh yeah, the former girlfriend of Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger once posed nude for a fashion photographer (a photo of the session was auctioned off by Christie's for $91,000 this past April).
Curiously, when the subject has removed her clothes entirely, the media spontaneously develops a prudish moral code. Nudity? That's going too far!
Looking forward
As 2009 is ushered in and these women all settle into their ensuing career upgrades, hockey practices, or prison sentences, it's clear that, at the very least, women have increased visibility in the political arena. Case in point: as the New Year begins, the odds-on favorite for most-talked-about politician of 2009 is bound to be Caroline Kennedy, who is definitely of the lady persuasion. Maybe by the time Bristol Palin's baby is 35, she can easily engineer a non-novel run for the presidency. She'll sure make her grandmother-who-may-actually-be-her-mother proud.
