Portland Phoenix honored for election coverage
At the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies annual awards banquet in Tucson, Arizona, last Friday, Portland Phoenix staff and freelancers were recognized for their coverage of the 2008 elections, with a second-place award, tying the City Newspaper of Rochester, New York, for the honors.

Unless you work in the alt-weekly business, you almost certainly weren't in Toronto this past weekend to whoop it up with a horde of slightly disheveled journos at the 33rd annual Association of Alternative Newsweeklies conference.

Happily, the estimated $36,000 cost state officials told a reporter it would cost to retrieve certain e-mails sent to or from Kurt Adams when he was chairman of the Maine Public Utilities Commission turns out to have been a gross overstatement.

At the New England Newspaper and Press Association awards banquet earlier this month, Portland Phoenix writers earned several awards in the weekly newspaper category.

Longtime Portland Phoenix contributing writer Lance Tapley's investigation of the Maine State Prison and the state's corrections system as a whole have reached a yet wider audience with the publication of an essay by Tapley in The United States and Torture: Interrogation, Incarceration, and Abuse.
