Oh, the humanity! Thankfully, though, there was a voice of reason: Dot Joyce, Mayor Menino’s spokeswoman, who sternly observed that city computers and equipment shouldn’t be used for personal business.
Facebook-gate dominated the Herald the next day, too, starting with the cover (“Grow Up, Kids”). Inside, columnist Margery Eagan voiced stern disapproval of Derjue, et al. (inexplicably citing a beer-related tweet Derjue wrote well after City Hall closed); media writer Jessica Heslam did the same; and Heslam and David Wedge reported that, hot on the heels of the Herald’s exposé, Menino’s chief information officer was hard at work drafting a new social-media policy.
All good to know, obviously, and Menino must have appreciated the free PR. Still, wouldn’t some actual coverage of the mayor’s race — or of pressing issues facing the city — have been a better choice?
