Sports blotter: "Running out of ways to make fun of the Bengals" edition

Another Bengal arrest
It’s actually getting boring. The litany of Cincinnati Bengal arrests has now advanced at least two full lengths beyond hilarity and into yawner territory. It seems like every time a Bengal walks out his door — for any reason, even with the most innocent intentions — he ends up crashing a speedboat into a pier full of nuns, or hurling gin-soaked vomitus into the back of the governor’s limo, or punching out the window of a police cruiser, or bedding three junior-high-school girls behind a dumpster. These guys can’t go to the store for a jug of milk without committing at least a misdemeanor.

The latest case features standout former West Virginia running back Quincy Wilson, who was arrested along with 13 others outside a bar in Huntington, West Virginia. The crowd was celebrating after a wedding, and police arrived to break things up after shots were fired. (What is this, Iraq?) Wilson is one of three former WVU football players who have accumulated serious arrest totals after going pro. One is Wilson’s current Bengals teammate Chris Henry, who was suspended recently for half a season by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for racking up four arrests this past year. The other is Adam “Pacman” Jones, who was suspended for the entire season by Goodell after being arrested or questioned by police numerous times in 2006, and who was wanted by police once again this past week after reports that his entourage was involved in a shooting at an Atlanta strip club.

Yes, you heard that right — Jones and his entourage were involved in another strip-club shooting last week. No charges have been filed in the Atlanta case as of yet, although Jones was also just hit with two felony counts stemming from the Las Vegas fracas. Police are charging him with coercion, for allegedly threatening to kill Minxx strip-club employees during an incident that left the bar manager, a former pro wrestler named Tommy Urbanski, paralyzed.

I’m giving Wilson 10 points for being stupid enough to put the Bengals in the crime pages again, but Pacman . . . I’m going to bump Pacman up to 110 points for the year, putting him in the lead for the season.

This guy gets involved in a shooting that leaves a guy a paraplegic, gets suspended for the year, and then goes out again to a strip club with an armed posse? Smart as a whip, this kid. Sorry to hear your career is over, Pacman.

Crimontana
Sports-crime news continues to pour in from Montana. Actual sports news out of Big Sky Country, of course, is rare, but arrests involving Montana athletes are becoming weirdly common. Just this past week, “Blotter” detailed the story of University of Montana cornerback Jimmy Wilson, who was arrested for the shooting of his aunt’s boyfriend, Kevin Smoot, in southern California. Also detailed was Montana’s strange recent history of violent and felony crimes, including the leveling of drug-trafficking charges against Montana State wideout Rick Gatewood and a kidnapping/murder case involving two ex-MSU athletes, former football player John Lebrum and former basketball player Branden Miller.
