The good news, such as it is, is that O’Neal seems deeply distressed by Kit’s exit. It’s a safe bet that he’ll get her back in the fold and that she and most of her five compatriots will lose significant amounts of weight. Shaq’s side project of bringing mandatory physical-education classes to a Florida elementary school may even succeed. If so — and if Shaq’s Big Challenge raises awareness of childhood obesity while humanizing its victims — I suppose a case could be made that Kit’s personal trauma was a necessary evil. Even so, it would have been nice if Shaq had proceeded with a little greater caution — whether he used to be fat or not.
