For too long, all we Bostonians knew of Southern comfort was a bottle of booze bearing its name. Country cooking has typically been relegated to home kitchens and a handful of under-the-radar restaurants. Enter Hungry Mother. The brainchild of husband-wife duo Alon and Rachel Miller Munzer fuses down-home style with chef Barry Maiden’s French expertise, bringing refined soul food to Kendall Square. The vibe is cozy and warm, like yo mama’s kitchen table, and the food an irresistibly interesting combination of Southern favorites (cornmeal catfish, shrimp and grits) and unexpected offerings (gnocchi with butternut-squash broth)
