Does it work? As Beatrice might say, yes and no. As you might expect in an allegory, characterization is thin. The taxidermist, in particular, is a cipher, and both Henry’s connection to him and his great revelation feel unfounded. But the images Martel — our literary taxidermist — summons are almost unbearably haunting. Wounded animals, stuck in time, trying to grasp the horrors of man.
