But the heart of the production lies in the pairing of Derrah and Airaldi, who bring a sad, sweet grandeur and some strong singing to their decorously spooning, completely camp-free old chums. I never thought to see either the old or the new ART field a Cabaret, but in this unlikely outing, the regimes join together in a dance as humane and ultimately tough as that of Fräulein Schneider and Herr Schultz.
