Joyce Carol Oates | Host: Faith Salie
6 pm, Sanctuary at Trinity Church, 206 Clarendon Street
Joyce Carol Oates's prolific writing has been mentioned exponentially more times than the number of books she's produced. That said, she's a wonder; try to think about what life must be like when you write two books a year, every year, for 40 years. It's been reported that she writes in the car on her way to the airport. Oates's work ethic is as Victorian as her iconic author photo: black-haired, black-clad, and gaunt, she appears to look coyly toward death (but to mention the spookiness of Marion Ettlinger's portrait is nearly as trite as remarking on the number of books Oates has published). Oates's latest book is called Sourland, disappointing anyone who might have thought she'd written something chipper for once.
