Dueling stages

The Huntington Theatre Company hosted Propeller, the all-male British Shakespeare troupe helmed by Edward Hall. The visitors fielded a farcical Comedy of Errors set south of the border, and a jauntily ghoulish Richard III engulfed in all the grim accouterments of a Victorian hospital. The same 14 actors manned these disparate productions, which were characterized by a thespian rigor that defied their outlandishness. In Twelfth Night the Bard does the gender bending for us, supplying a heroine dressed as a boy, who pines for a man while being pursued by a woman. Melia Bensussen's production for Actors' Shakespeare Project boasted a delightfully befuddled Viola in Marianna Bassham and was awash in easy comedy, understated melancholy, and water.
