McCauley also bears a formidable load in Sugar, which is directed by Maureen Shea. Compelling if sometimes rambling, the show combines fascinating if perilous personal biography, off-Broadway as well as black history, overstretched metaphor, and eye-opening medical information and indictment. The fluid and personable McCauley, who shares the stage with composer/pianist Chauncey Moore, seems as much to be living as performing onstage. Interacting with a trio of chairs, eating an avocado, giving herself an insulin shot, she holds your attention in her wiry hands. But a clearer trajectory and some slimming would make Sugar even tastier.
