Speaking of realms, AS220 expands downtown once again — albeit temporarily — with "Delicate Shudder," an exhibit of two Providence artists in a pop-up space at 231 Westminster Street (through May 12). Maralie Armstrong-Rial, who does booking for AS220, mixes original and found footage in sexy surreal videos and photos. In the video Strict, a woman in lingerie holding a riding crop dances, nuns cut a woman's hair, anonymous hands hold a rosary, and the dancing woman's body turns into a kaleidoscope of legs, all to buzzing synthesized music that gives it the feel of an '80s music video. Untitled, 2 features what looks to be found video of mysterious women walking around in fur coats with just lingerie underneath, including two women who pet each other's fur coats. Frames freeze and stutter, a bit like scratched DVDs. Armstrong-Rial seems to be still developing her aesthetic, but she creates a furtive, erotic, and bit paranoid mood that feels something like our collective unconscious memories of early MTV and late night Skinemax cable B-movies recalled via YouTube.
Dana Dunham presents half a dozen black-and-white, 4x5 studio camera photos of his parents, bearded fellows from Provincetown, and a person in an elaborate bondage mask. Such subjects are perhaps overly familiar territory, but the handsome large prints evoke the 19th-century photos of Julia Margaret Cameron with perhaps undercurrents of Joel-Peter Witkin. And the heads and nude bodies seem to emerge out of the prints' scuffed, drippy darkness into states of stress or ecstasy.
