It’s global class war

By LANCE TAPLEY  |  July 6, 2006

The Global Class War is only the beginning of a conversation. It doesn’t address whether a North American Union would have some protective tariffs to defend “domestic” industries from the China price. It doesn’t address the social-democratic or socialist alternatives to globalization being developed by the new leftist regimes in Latin America.

Given the power and propaganda behind globalization, isn’t Faux’s solution pie in the sky? He admits that a change in America’s course depends on “the willingness of American citizens to accept the erosion of their economic security” — and on the willingness of the rest of the world to lend us money. He doesn’t try to predict how long these attitudes will persist. Americans have a big capacity to take it in the neck, buy lottery tickets, and get diverted by such issues as gay marriage.

If European integration is the model, a crisis will be needed to precipitate change. In Europe, the crisis was no less than World Wars I and II. Let’s hope the resolution of the global class war will be less dreadful. In any case, Jeff Faux shows us a way out.
