The Pulp plan
By
BILL RODRIGUEZ
| March 7, 2007
In keeping with the flamboyant excess of its subject, the
Pulp Uncovered
festival provides a few bells and whistles celebrating H.P. Lovecraft, since the events coincide with the 70th anniversary of his death.
Things get started Thursday, March 15 at 6 pm in Smith-Buonanno Hall, Room 106 with a keynote address by pulp writer and historian Will Murray, followed by a reception at 7 pm for the exhibit “Pulp Uncovered: How Pulp Magazines Changed America,” at the John Nicholas Brown Center, 357 Benefit St. The work of Providence horror writer Lovecraft, a seminal figure in the genre, is highlighted.
“Lovecraft At the Ladd” takes place on March 16 at 7 pm, commemorating his fascination with outer space, with a guest speaker at the university's Ladd Observatory, 210 Doyle Ave.
Two Providence walking tours will take place on the weekend. On March 17 at 11 am, the Rhode Island Historical Society will offer “H.P. Lovecraft: Life and Works.” On March 18 the Providence Preservation Society's tour, “Lovecraft As Preservationist,” begins at 1 pm. Each tour is $10.
A
Pulp Uncovered
film series will run all four days at the Cable Car Cinema, 204 South Main St. and at the RISD Auditorium. Tickets are $8 ($6 for students).
Additional lectures, panel discussions, and performances are also scheduled. Go to
www.pulpuncovered.com
for details.

TRINITY’S DELICATELY BALANCED MERCHANT OF VENICE
| February 15, 2012
The Merchant of Venice gives modern audiences a lot to think and talk about — including, we can forget, a surprising amount of comedy. But the main concern is it being such a head-shaking case study of the era's anti-Semitism.

I can't imagine that anyone returning from a visit to Tuscany fails to wax rhapsodic about the cuisine, perhaps as soon as the customs inspection.
