- Burning Rome
Seacoast Repertory Theatre’s production of the Sondheim classic is droll, zestily paced, and full of bright colors and enticing choreography.
- Aging warnings
Each night smiles three times, the aged and jaded Madame Armfelt (Maggie Mark) tells her young granddaughter Fredrika (Hannah Forsley): first for the young, who know nothing; second for the fools, who know too little; and finally for the old, who know too much.
- Killing grounds
Chekhov wrote to a friend while composing The Seagull , first of his Big Four, that he was writing a “comedy with three female parts, six male parts, four acts, a landscape (a view of the lake), much talk about literature, and five tons of love.”
- Zero at the bone
A bleak expressionist fable centered on a murderous bookkeeper symbolically named Zero. Even when you throw in sexual repression, religious zealotry, a trip to Heaven, and enough dissonance to sate Stephen Sondheim, that doesn’t sound like the stuff of song and dance.
- When in Rome . . .
Pretty soon the last four years might seem like just an unusually long winter break.
- After the fall
The evil is boiled down in the revival of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and that makes for a stew far tastier than Mrs. Lovett’s human-hamburger pies.
- Thirtysomething
When Jonathan Larson, the Pulitzer-winning composer of Rent , wrote tick, tick . . . BOOM! , he could not have known what the “boom” would be.
- Sweet tooth
I hope the estate of Leonard Bernstein is collecting royalties for The Little Prince . Rachel Portman’s unremittingly sweet and relentlessly lilting score for this children’s opera based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s famous story borrows heavily from Bernstein’s Candide and West Side Story .
- Streets where you live
The 2001 National Theatre of Great Britain/Cameron Mackintosh production further sharpens the Shavian edge of this beloved musical.
- Lovely, dark, and deep
Everyone’s tale winds up among the trees in Good Theater’s enchanting and absolutely virtuoso production of Into the Woods , Stephen Sondheim’s clever musical elaboration upon our favorite fairy tales, seamlessly directed by Brian Allen at the St. Lawrence.
- Real-world follies
For hard rock, heated debate, child-care tips, and latex puppetry, 2006 was a banner year in television. Who says the culture’s going to the dogs?
