Nachtrieb means the nihilistic descent to reflect the thirtysomethings’ helplessness in the face of death and the “terribility” of the world as well as to suggest how close we are to drowning not in lattes but in primal juices. There might even be a vegetarian message in the blood, guts, and gourmandizing: there is a program quote from Pythagoras to the effect that “as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other.” But there is more South Park–style ironic insouciance than message in Hunter Gatherers, which is uninhibitedly enacted by Marc Carver as the put-upon Tom, Denise Cormier as the scathing, estrogen-oozing Wendy, Tom Kee as a Richard whose virility borders on derangement, and Laura Latreille as Pam, who discovers her inner predator with a lick of a lamb haunch. Pass the mint jelly.
