The critic Mario Naves, writing in the New York Observer a couple of years ago, remarked that if the Whitney Museum had the nerve they would give Dodd the major retrospective she richly deserves. This sampling of her small paintings from five decades is not it, but it does argue for a larger show. The special identity that she brings to everything she does has been, apparently, there since the beginning. Given the current temerity of the Whitney we may have to wait a long time for such a show, but in the meantime this one is required viewing for anyone with a serious interest in the art of painting.
