June (Fitzpatrick) mentioned to me that “this grapefruit’s in love with that grapefruit” was your favorite of the lot.
It’s very curious — it’s the last piece I made before the show went up. I was in the studio nine or 10 hours a day every day. For that last work, I was in this one-and-a-half hour space of pure confidence — unfazed, direct, decision-making. I was sitting there and thought “I want to make a picture of a grapefruit. I need to get a grapefruit.” Went to Hannaford’s, picked up a grapefruit: “This is a good grapefruit.” Cut it in half. Made a few preliminary marks, knew I wanted the sticker in there, I knew I wanted it to be simple. Didn’t blink — there was no doubt with each decision. Then, the last mark I made, I hesitated. It was very subtle, but I asked, “Is this the right thing?” and then the whole feeling went away. That was the bookend and it was over.
