Early in the 70-minute show, a brief monologue from Carson stresses Mabel's belief that "colored folks" are the most patriotic and the most hopeful citizens of this country. "They're like a mighty river," she says, "and if that dries up, America will dry up." Praise be that enough black Americans kept that faith and brought all us along with them to this time of renewed hope and a new leader.
