Glist and her husband Alan, along with Sandra and Kenneth Greenblatt, founded GFour Productions, starting off strong with Nine, which won the 1982 Tony for Best Musical. Twenty-nine more Tonys followed. Other hits have been My One and Only, Grand Hotel, and both the original and revival of La Cage Aux Folles. Recently, Broadway saw their production of Ring of Fire, the Johnny Cash story; and Dolly Parton's 9 to 5: The Musical this spring. Individually and together, the two couples have produced close to 100 shows, mostly musicals but occasionally straight plays, such as Sam Shepard's True West.
"You know," Glist says, "the only thing I've really learned is that the only sure thing about being successful in this crazy world of producing theater is that there is no sure thing."
Yup. Busy with readying Menopause the Musical for off-Broadway those years ago, they sent an underling to check out another show that wanted them to produce it. Nah, they were advised. It was a little frolic you might have heard of: Jersey Boys?
