The Funn(k)y Drummer

Fred Armisen in Jens Hannemann Complicated Drumming Technique

Before he hit the big time portraying the president on SNL, Armisen was slathering on a different color makeup as he pounded percussion with Blue Man Group. Before that, he was the drummer for scabrous Chicago art punks Trenchmouth. Armisen has always split the difference between indie rock and comedy. These days, even as he shows off his rhythmic chops on SNL — as drumming Venezuelan funnyman Fericito, say, or keeping time for the surreal version of "Goodnight Saigon" that closed this past season — he's still found time to release his Jens Hannemann Complicated Drumming Technique instructional DVD on indie label Drag City, and record Web comedy skits with former Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein as a member of the duo ThunderAnt.
