Narrative truth

By GREG COOK  |  November 11, 2009

“Miller’s down.” “Shut that dog up.” Two shots. The dog yelps and then is silent. “Taking fire.” “The kid’s been hit.” “Fuck the kid.” “Let’s get out of here.” Vehicles rumble away. Women holler in Arabic, maybe at the departing soldiers. They seem to call to a child — the hit kid? — “Yasmin.” Quiet, then a heartrending wail. Then silence until the broken windows and walls slowly heal and the children return, laughing.
