The Boston Center for the Arts attempts its own reboot of programming with two exhibits — the process-oriented "Amalgam" and the animal-themed "Different Kind of Monster" — that inaugurate an effort to plumb the work of artists occupying the complex's studios. Curator (and former Phoenix scribe) Evan Garza does a good job of drawing from a limited pool, but the limits show through. Lazaro Montano's This is so gay offers the title cut out from metallic foil letters, the sort you use to make party banners. It dangles limply from a column in the middle of the room — an insult turned gaily festive, and perhaps into a sad-sack battle cry. Robert Rovenolt presents sturdy abstract assemblages. Rebecca Rose Greene's Monster features child mannequins outfitted in makeshift cardboard animal masks. They haunt the gallery like creepy kids in horror movies. But, on the whole, I feel the folks in the BCA studios need to up their game.
