ROMAN POLANSKI IN THE DRIVEWAY TO HIS HOME, COVENT GARDEN, LONDON, 1972

1. When I visited Roman Polanski at his townhouse in Covent Garden London, he said “Wait,” and ran upstairs for a quick shave. Waiting for him to return, my eye fixed on a miniature version of himself — a life-like doll perched high on a window shelf. I clipped off one frame and then a few moments later the real Roman reappeared, all freshened up for his portrait. I finished off the roll with head-and-shoulders, full-length shots and was quite excited at what I’d done because I instinctively felt I’d come away with something quite special, even before the film was developed.
