3. Charles Bukowski — “Buk” to his friends — and I go back to when I was a college student in the early ’60s, editing the school’s literary mag while promoting his work every chance I got. Years later, by happenstance, we ended up with the same publisher, John Martin of Black Sparrow Press. Back in ’72, John arranged to have me make Buk’s portrait. It was one of those divine accidents that had his paisley print shirt blend in with the stucco wall behind his apartment while I was clicking away.
