The Village Kitchen

Great pizza takes a Village
By DARCY HEITZKE  |  July 5, 2006

The vibe at this tiny Huron Village café may be laid-back, but there’s nothing unceremonious about the food. The West Cambridge gem combines fresh ingredients, friendly service, and affordable prices to serve up some of the most delicious pizza, pasta, sandwiches, and calzones in town.

In 2004, owners Jessica Allison and Djillali Belabbes moved their original restaurant, Il Buongustaio, across the street. With a new name, much-needed extra space, and some of the classic dishes from their former restaurant, the Village Kitchen was born. The pizza, with its thin crust and abundant toppings, is probably one the best pies you’ll ever taste. Try the mouth-watering “Francesca” ($8.95/small; $12.95/large), topped with tomato sauce, meatballs, Gorgonzola, and mozzarella; and the “Primavera” ($8.95/$13.95), covered with garlic and oil, fresh tomato, zucchini, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, caramelized onions, and mozzarella. Or try one of the lunchtime slice specials, made with the owners’ choice of fresh toppings.

If pizza isn’t your style, go for the delicious Tacchino sandwich ($5.95), with roasted turkey and provolone topped with lettuce, tomato, and extra-virgin olive oil, served on a fresh baguette; or try the hearty gnocchi alla Sorentina ($9.95), a rich potato pasta smothered in melted mozzarella, fresh tomato, and basil. Still not full? Indulge in a homemade brownie ($1.50) and cappuccino ($3). You won’t regret it.
