West on Centre’s banana-bread pudding

Go bananas for dessert
By LIZ BOMZE  |  February 9, 2006

West Centre's banana-bread puddingIt’s not that my belly had any room to spare after the crock of creamy spinach and artichoke dip and the two-inch-thick maple-glazed pork chop (and it’s a good thing I didn’t order that side of broccolini). It’s just that the classic children’s rationale still holds true for me: there’s always room for dessert.

And caramel anything is an automatic contender. Add brioche to the mix, and it’s a done deal. While some bread puddings look better on paper than what ends up on your plate, this is hardly the case at West Roxbury’s West on Centre. A banana-lover’s triple whammy, the banana bread pudding comes oval-shaped and decadent: an inch of spongy baked brioche with a thin, crisp crust, surrounded by a moat of warm, caramel-sauced banana slices. Oh, and don’t forget the topping: a delicious scoop of buttermilk-banana ice cream.

Available for $7 at West on Centre, 1732 Centre Street, in West Roxbury. Call 617.323.4199.

Much like the pottery studio on the Station Street block in Brookline Village, Kookoo is practically imperceptible to the average passerby. In fact, were it not for the chalkboard easel of menu items out front on the sidewalk, you could easily miss it — but your loss would be considerable.
