A taste of Mondial de la bière
May 30 to June 3
By

| May 24, 2007
Over the past several years, the annual Mondial de la bière in downtown Montreal has established itself as one of the better beer festivals in North America. Check it out this weekend, from May 30 to June 3. (It’s only a five-and-a-half hour drive!) And besides allowing you to take advantage of a favorable exchange rate, the fest features many ales not available stateside, including fine libations from Boréale, Brasserie Grimoire, and Brasserie Trou du Diable. Admission is free, and tasting coupons are just one “loonie” each. Call 514.722.9640 or visit

The long crawl
I've got a sneaking suspicion that my editor likes getting me drunk.
Basil bliss
The sun is finally here to stay (for a few months, anyway), and with it come the smells and tastes of summer.

Waning moon in Scorpio. VOC 6:31 pm to 4:10 am Monday. Misunderstandings are more likely to occur in the evening. Today is very good for cutting dead wood. (Hint: water your tree before it's too late.) Scorpio could intimidate others without meaning to; Aquarius is in a mood to escape to that refuge where no one knows his/her name. Shopping tip: home-brew kits or anything pickled.
Then and now
It’s not exactly a stroll down Memory Lane, but pretty close to it.
Canadian trailer trash chug 420 IPA
Trailer Park Boys , a cult-hit Canadian mockumentary about mobile-home living, will feature scenes about Maine in its upcoming seventh season on cable TV north of the border.

To bend a line by Raymond Carver, what do you talk about when you talk about club anniversaries?
Swing the statue
I intend to show my gratitude to this state by commissioning a monument to be placed in some appropriate public space; it would depict historic moments that define Maine’s character (which is, to be honest, kinda weird).
Patagonian express
Bruce Chatwin crossed the Rio Negro and entered the Patagonian Desert looking for an answer.
LifeSavor
Eating might sustain us, but eating for a good cause nourishes our spirits as well as our bodies.
Pensées mal gardées
Boston Ballet’s second production of Frederick Ashton’s La Fille Mal Gardée made it clearer than ever what a fractured fairy tale this is. The pastoral scrim that’s revealed when the curtain goes up sports a surly Demeter bearing a sheaf of grain and bare breasts — no danger of her being badly watched.

We know that sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.
