Hunt’s situation has gotten attention from the likes of Slashdot, Fark, and Rolling Stone, and she’s already raised nearly $600 through screwpirates.com. But despite the attention, Hunt’s parents still don’t know the RIAA is demanding thousands from their daughter. They know about the lawsuit — they actually bought her an iTunes gift certificate last Christmas “to show their support” — but they don’t know that a settlement amount has been named. “What I’m hoping for is at the end of the six months [I] go to my parents and be like, ‘Have I got a story for you.’ And I can show them the magazines and newspapers and be like, ‘But I raised the money. It’s cool! I got it taken care of.’ ” She says her parents can’t afford the three-grand-plus either. “They can’t help me, there’s no way.”
For now that leaves more than $3000. In addition to accepting donations online, she plans to hold a bake sale and a Texas Hold ’em tournament. Hunt grins, wearing a green T-shirt bearing the image of an orange that reads can’t concentrate. “I figure that if I’m getting screwed, at least everyone else should have a good time.”
