PINELAND FARMS | Just a 20-minute drive out of Portland, this 5000-acre area offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing for all levels. The views off into western Maine are totally worth the expedition up I-95. A full day of skiing will only set you back $13; a half day will run you $9. Checking out the premises on snowshoe costs $6 for a full day and $4 for a half day. A variety of ski and snowshoe rental packages are also available, none higher than $24. | 15 Farm View Dr, New Gloucester | | 207.688.4539

SMILING HILL FARMS | This local farm is perfect for the USM crowd. It's 10 minutes from either campus, and is perfect for a cheap afternoon or Sunday-morning activity. Equipped with Rossignol ski package rentals and a refreshment hut, this wide-open and groomed terrain is expansive and accommodating. A full day of skiing costs $9, while a half day is $5. Snowshoeing is $5. The hours are dependent on weather, so it's always good to give a call and check before you head out. | 781 County Rd, Westbrook | | 207.775.4818
