Today, of course, being able to drive across Asia with just a passport in hand is out of the question. In the “now” of terrorism-drenched 2007, when Afghanistan is in pieces and smuggling can involve nuclear materials, when learning about “Eastern religion” in the actual East could put you in harm’s way, such escapades are a distant cultural memory. The times, they have indeed a-changed. “I try not to be fearful,” says Carol. “But living a peaceful life still eludes me.”
