High winds grounded the balloons for the only time since World War II in 1971, prompting NBC to air clips from the previous year in their place. However, the rest of the parade went on, including the floats, marching bands, and dancers. The year also marked the end of the era: Golden Girl Betty White and Bonanza's Lorne Greene stepped down after co-hosting since 1963.
