#4: First video game character balloon debuts, crashes, 1993
Young nerds celebrated a huge Turkey Day victory when Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog became the first videogame character to float down the streets of New York City... for a little while at least. Whether he was weighed down from collecting rings all day or simply traveling too fast is still undetermined, but what we do know is that Sonic spiraled out of control, crashing into a Columbus Circle lamppost and injuring an off-duty cop.
While the 1993 parade was a windy disaster, NBC told co-hosts Willard Scott and Katie Couric not to address the incident on-air, and the crash was not shown on TV.
