Keeping up with the Joneses is tough. Derrick Borte should have learned this before deciding to write, produce, and direct his first major film, a slice of social commentary that loses focus as it unspools.
There’s a good idea here. Consummate couple Steve and Kate Jones (David Duchovny and Demi Moore) move into a cultivated suburban community of estates with their ideal teenage offspring, Jenn and Mick (Amber Heard and Ben Hollingsworth) — they’re the nouveau riche, showing off an unending supply of the latest and greatest consumer toys, and they soon become the toast of the neighborhood.
But what would the envious couple next door (Glenne Headly and Gary Cole) think were they to witness Jenn, with her perfectly formed (of course) breasts, climbing naked into bed with her dad, who doesn’t seem very upset? (Duchovny is a noted sex addict, but still . . . ) The Stepfords, these ain’t. Yet the truth of the matter, clever at first, becomes confused at best.
