Adapting the diary of Grace Elliott, the English lady of the title, and her account of her travails during the Terror, the film has its share of lengthy discussions. The stakes in this case, though, are not a spoiled vacation as in Summer, but the death of thousands and the course of history. And so in one of his most artificial films, Rohmer takes on his gravest subject, demonstrating that small talk can engender the biggest consequences.
