A DANGEROUS METHODIn this rare period film, David Cronenberg confronts his usual monsters of the unconscious, but only in theory, and they are all the more terrifying for that. Back in the formative days of the psychoanalytical movement Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) grooms hotshot protégé Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) as his successor, a paternal relationship that goes sour when Jung is smitten by a brilliant, beautiful patient (Keira Knightley in a bizarre performance that grows on you). No sooner than you can say "heal thyself" than all three fall prey to the very psychic forces they are exploring in this sedate, wrenching, utterly accomplished portrait of the analysts.
