Nick, meanwhile, struggles with his own demons: his mother's suicide, his addiction, and his fear of who he's becoming. The way father and son's stories ultimately twin is surprising and poignant. Jonathan's wisdom and Nick's compassion are the gifts their relationship gives them, and the film honors the dignity of these two misfits in an adaptation that's a work of art all its own.
