Batman — From the comic to the chthonic

Wayne's World
By NICK JOHNSTON  |  July 20, 2012

BATMAN (1966)

Director: Leslie H. Martinson (PT-109 ).

Real World Events: US bombs Hanoi. Medicare and Miranda rights established. France exits NATO. The Sound of Music wins Best Picture Oscar. Star Trek debuts on TV. Mao publishes The Little Red Book. Blonde on Blonde. Reagan becomes Governor of California. Black Panthers.

Comic World Events: The Batman titles succumb to the kitsch of the TV show. Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Stan Lee continue the Marvel miracle. R. Crumb awaits.

Gotham City Style: The Swingin' '60s, although with a more "Cary Grant on acid" vibe.

Under the Cowl: Adam Fucking West. 'Nuff- said.

Sidekick/Love Interest: Burt Ward as Robin of "Holy [whatever] Batman!"

Bat-gadgets: Many that are suspiciously ad hoc and situation specific, like "bat-shark repellant."

Bat Bad-guys: The Joker, Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman dehydrate members of the UN Security Council in a scheme to take over the world.

Bad/Bat-line: "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!"

Cowl Rating /Phoenix Crix Pix: N/A

Cowl rating/Nick's Pick: Three cowls. A camp classic, but made it impossible to take the property seriously for over 20 years.

Note to the bike-porn fans at the Brattle: with all of its shots of toned, sweaty shoulder muscles arched over handlebars, you may be the only audience able to get off on this veloci-thriller.
  •   REVIEW: THE OOGIELOVES AND THE BIG BALLOON ADVENTURE  |  August 29, 2012
As an "interactive" movie, in which the whole family is encouraged to sing along and dance, The Oogieloves fails miserably.
  •   REVIEW: NITRO CIRCUS: THE MOVIE  |  August 16, 2012
At the beginning of Gregg Godfrey and Jeremy Rawle's loose documentary about the title troupe, two men dressed in Evel Knievel jumpsuits help launch a friend off of an impossibly high building for a base-jumping stunt.
