Batman — From the comic to the chthonic

Wayne's World
By NICK JOHNSTON  |  July 20, 2012

BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM (1993)

Directors: Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski.

Real World Events: Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Monday Night Raw debuts. Waco. Magic: The Gathering debuts. NAFTA. Reagan diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Comic World Events: Superman is alive again. Bane breaks Batman's back; Azeral dons the cowl while Wayne is on the mend.

Gotham City Style: The gothic world of Burton's movies is taken to its illogical extreme, but contains some absolutely beautiful designs, especially the "World of Tomorrow" theme park where the finale takes place.

Under The Cowl: Voice actor Kevin Conroy, who is considered by many to have the Batman voice.

Sidekick/Love Interest: Andrea Beaumont, the lover who jilted Bruce before they could be married.

Bat-Gadgets: Nothing new.

Villains: The Phantasm, who is really Andrea on a similar quest for vengeance; The Joker (Mark Hamill), who kidnaps her; mobsters, one voiced by Abe Vigoda.

Bat-line: None rings a bell.

Cowl rating/Phoenix Crix Pix: N/A

Cowl rating/Nick's Pix: Four cowls. The best Pre-Nolan Batman, the most emotionally true of the entire franchise.

Note to the bike-porn fans at the Brattle: with all of its shots of toned, sweaty shoulder muscles arched over handlebars, you may be the only audience able to get off on this veloci-thriller.
  •   REVIEW: THE OOGIELOVES AND THE BIG BALLOON ADVENTURE  |  August 29, 2012

  •   REVIEW: NITRO CIRCUS: THE MOVIE  |  August 16, 2012
At the beginning of Gregg Godfrey and Jeremy Rawle's loose documentary about the title troupe, two men dressed in Evel Knievel jumpsuits help launch a friend off of an impossibly high building for a base-jumping stunt.
