BUT YOU WROTE THE PLAY AND THE SCREENPLAY BEFORE BRIDESMAIDS CAME OUT, RIGHT? Well yeah, the screenplay made the Black List in 2008, which is the list of best unproduced screenplays. But wedding comedies are always around, you know? Like The Hangover was just happening when I was first writing the script. Then it was like, "Oh, well, this is like The Hangover," and I was like, "Well, no, it's not." And as good as Bridesmaids is, it's a studio movie directed by a dude. The subject matter is similar [to mine], and obviously the title and everything. But this movie is me. You can very much tell that one person made it. Not that hundreds and hundreds of people didn't help me make it. But it came from one person's, like, vagina.
DO YOU THINK THE SUCCESS OF BRIDESMAIDS MIGHT HELP WITH YOUR OWN FILM? Oh I hope so! One of the reasons I'm grateful for that movie is that it made a lot of money, and it proved that people could watch a female-centric, R-rated comedy and it wasn't this big scary thing. I don't look at it like competition, because it was preparing people for the shitstorm that is my movie. If Bachelorette came out five years ago, no one would want to see it. But everybody here really likes it! And I really enjoy that, because it is such a divisive movie. I don't think I'll get that anywhere else again.
WELL, THIS IS PROVINCETOWN. IT PROBABLY WASN'T EDGY ENOUGH. Exactly. They're like, "Aw, that was sweet."
