Too wistful, not supernatural enough

DOUSED: Paul McCartney wrecks the moment

Despite an ominous setting (a glass house on stilts) and its South Korean pedigree (it’s based on the supernatural mystery Il Mare), Argentine director Alejandro Agresti’s film reveals its wistful romantic intentions early on, in Rachel Portman’s pleasantly forgettable piano score (which echoes the flat surface of a Lake Michigan cove in autumn) and in the script by David Auburn (Proof), wherein the mopy lovers ponder their Somewhere In Time–like predicament, divided by a manageable two years rather than a century. Agresti adds the theme from A Man and a Woman and Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon” and shoots those old pals from Speed, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, as if they were Italian New Wave idols. But when they finally embrace, the music of their open hearts turns out to be by Paul McCartney. And that would douse any passion.
