Even if Andy Warhol did call filmmaker Jack Smith “the only person I would ever copy,” Mary Jordan’s portrait of the avant-garde anti-hero goes a little far in asserting his importance. Film, performance art, rock videos, Fellini — Jack Smith, it seems, made it all happen. Despite Jordan’s sometimes stifling love of her subject, she has an imaginative eye for Smith’s surprisingly coherent æsthetics. Those who admired and hated his films — “Flaming Creatures” (1963) is either famous or notorious depending on who you talk to — may have painted him as everything from sexual freedom fighter to moral menace, but for Smith it was all about the “Baroque.” His ornate sensibilities are on display throughout, and with his sad, sing-songy voice serving as a guide, it’s hard not to be moved. Warhol, Jonas Mekas, and Mary Jordan herself want him to have transformed a world that he only wanted to escape. The Harvard Film Archive is accompanying this documentary with a program of “Flaming Creatures” and two other Jack Smith films go to

Hope against Hollywood
Mr. Keough’s “Is There Any ‘Hope’ in Hollywood” article makes my own point. Precious , The Blind Side , and The Princess and the Frog were strategically released to detract from the positive image of President Barack Obama.
Boston Underground Film Festival 2010
The Boston Underground Film Festival has a knack for showing you things you've never seen before (not to mention things you can never un-see, such as the sentient penis jackhammering its way through sheetrock in last year's headlining Bad Biology ). BUFF 2010 proves no exception, starting with the exquisitely weird opening-night entry, LOVE EXPOSURE (2008; March 25 at 7 pm).

PLUCK AND DETERMINATION
| March 09, 2010
People have always thought that Joanna Newsom was indulgent. At first, it was about her voice — the kind of nasal yelp that usually keeps a performer from getting on stage at all. Then, on her second album, it was about her vocabulary and her instrumentation.

"Listen, I will go on record saying I love Feist, I love Neko Case. I love that music. But that shit's easy listening for the twentysomethings. It fucking is. It's not hard to listen to any of that stuff."
DJ QUIK AND KURUPT | BLAQKOUT
| June 15, 2009
LA hip-hop has two threads, and DJ Quik pulls both of them. The first is g-funk, a production style that relies on deep, open grooves and an endless parade of funk samples.
FLIPPER | LOVE

Flipper formed in San Francisco in 1979, and they're remembered three decades later because of a song called "Sex Bomb" that's one of the funniest pieces of music I've ever heard.
ST. VINCENT'S ACTOR GETS A RUN-THROUGH
| May 26, 2009
There were not one but two clarinets on stage at the Somerville Theatre on Tuesday night, and that gives you some idea of how intricate Annie Clark's chamber-pop compositions can be.
