Reno 911!: Miami

Unconstrained by the small screen

After providing an outlandish corrective to the self-serious police officers on network TV for several years, the cops of Comedy Central’s Reno 911! have finally made it to the big screen. And the gang’s all here. This moronic collection of Reno’s finest have hopped a bus to Miami for a police convention, from which they are promptly shut out. Through a convenient plot twist, the real cops are trapped in the convention center and Lieutenant Dangle and crew must protect the city, bringing to the job their usual ineptness and weird sexual tension. Director Robert Ben Garant (who also plays a deputy) offsets commendable speed with sloppy editing that the faux-documentary style only partly explains away. Unconstrained by the small screen, the film indulges in explosions and in visiting guest stars (Paul Rudd?) but remains true to form by focusing on the little things, like thongs, of which there are more than in any other movie this year.

In their non-probing, unprovocative films, the characters this Hollywood comedic mafia chooses to celebrate are homely, smoke a lot of pot, and watch way too much porn. We get it. Yes, Apatow, Seth Rogen, and Jonah Hill aren’t exactly anyone’s dream dates based on physical attributes alone. But we saved a special unsexy spot for this threesome based on the inescapable fact that we’re completely sick of getting inundated with their repetitive shtick. Apatow gets bonus unsexy points for the right-wing current bubbling beneath his flicks.
