A bit small-screen

After the infamous guerrilla advertising campaign that triggered a terror alert and cost the Cartoon Network $2 million, the movie version of the irreverent, South Park–esque series arrives with little fanfare. For those not in the know, the three central nimrods aren’t your typical stooges, they’re fast-food items. There’s Shake, a generic soda cup; there’s a ball of meat by the inspired name of Meatwad. And Frylock, the super genius of the lot, is a menacing box of French fries. Force unfolds in trippy vignettes, with the trio battling a giant poodle amid the Great Pyramids and Abe Lincoln as a mad scientist. It’s dicy and sharp and pretty much demands an audience that’s under chemical influences. Unfortunately, the edge dulls as visitors from the future and a Bowflex home gym with world-annihilating capabilities factor in. Creators Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis are witty dudes, but their varsity tryout feels a bit small-screen.
