Dan in Real Life
From comedy to crap

VIDEO: Watch the trailer for
Dan in Real Life
.
What’s wrong with Steve Carrell? His is one of the quickest falls from comedy to crap since Chevy Chase. After his tour de force in
The 40-Year-Old Virgin
and a performance that’s the best thing in
Little Miss Sunshine
, there was
Evan Almighty
. Now we get this noisome bonbon. Carrell’s Dan is a widower and the writer of a family-advice column who, wouldn’t you know it, can’t control his own family! His daughters are spoiled brats who treat him like shit! But that’s just the beginning of the hilarity. During a family gathering where his parents and siblings treat him like shit, Dan escapes and meets Marie (Juliette Binoche, what’s your excuse?) and they fall in love. Wouldn’t you know it, she’s dating his boorish brother, who’s played by Dane Cook no less! Sheesh! And if you think that’s as much fun and misogyny as you can stand, wait till you see who ends up in the car with the bimbo! Steve Carrell — they’re treating you like shit.

Heat of the moment
There's a reason comedies are rarely over 110 minutes, and Virgin is a good example.
Review: The Strip
In lieu of Steve Carell’s hopelessly inept and earnest manager, we have his creepier duplicate, Glenn. Instead of the boorish brown-noser played by Rainn Wilson, there’s the more obnoxious Rick.

Catch and Release
Of all the characters in Susannah Grant’s punishing romantic comedy, Grady, the former fiancé of Gray (Jennifer Garner), has the least to complain about: he’s dead. Watch the trailer for Catch and Release (QuickTime)
Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?
Janet Jackson as the staid academic “Perfect Patty” delivers a smoldering nugget that lingers on screen long after the moment has passed.
Something New
Director Sanaa Hamri’s first feature doesn’t attempt something new so much as try to revive something old — it’s yet another romantic comedy with a twist.
Son of Rambow
Funnier than anything in this vaguely dark comedy is the thought of Stallone sitting through it.
Fido
It may sound silly, but director Andrew Currie stews together gore, social commentary, screwball camp, and dark comedy with savory potency.
Baby Mama
Not even SNL’s whipsmart Tina Fey and Amy Poehler can save writer/director Michael McCuller’s pregnancy comedy from its fate as another condescending, self-congratulatory fantasy of maternal bliss.
Crossword: 'Ghost of a chance'
What's the common link?
The Last Holiday
Queen Latifah has the Alec Guinness role as a quietly desperate type with a terminal prognosis in this remake of the 1950 romantic comedy.

Wes Anderson should always make movies featuring characters who are pubescent or younger — like Rushmore , which until this film was his best.

Lebanese director Nadine Labaki's whimsical film about internecine slaughter has a tone problem from the very start: a group of widows engage in a goofy line dance while the voiceover narrator bewails the death toll of religious warfare.
