“Madame Tutli-Putli”
The selection of live-action and animated shorts nominated for Oscars this year is an unchallenging and underwhelming lot. Two exceptions: Chris Lavis & Maciek Szczerbowski’s stop-motion animation piece “Madame Tutli-Putli,” about a woman on a nightmarish night train, has the look of an animated Egon Schiele drawing — menacing, delicate, macabre. And Alexander Petrov’s “My Love” is a dreamy Russian love story. But in the animated batch, “Peter and the Wolf” and “I Met the Walrus,” a pen-and-ink version of an interview with John Lennon, are unamusing, and though “Même les pigeons vont au Paradis/Even Pigeons Go to Heaven” is visually exciting (time machines, crooked salesmen), it’s also predictable. The live-action selections range from the maudlin (a cancer ward in “At Night”) to the exuberant (students and teacher in “Il supplente|The Substitute”). And “The Tonto Woman” could be a romantic subplot to

It’s one thing to cover a Beatles or Harry Nilsson tune, another to cover a whole album.

“It’s just a tacky play on words — a typically stupid Supergrass thing to do,” says Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes when I mention the title of the band’s new album.

ON CARPENTRY AND COLLEGE
| October 20, 2011
Age 30, I quit the Phoenix and ended up with a job as an apprentice to a carpenter. Sawing, chiseling, hammering, nail-gunning, tiling, sanding, slotting, framing, hauling, measuring, and sweeping are less obvious outcomes of an undergraduate career in the liberal arts. College, in strange and unexpected ways, prepared me for this sort of work. And in others, did not prepare me at all.

I knew a man pursuing a PhD in literature. His dissertation had to do with humor as a form of dissent in 20th-century literature. And how enthused he was at first! How passionate and excited.

DON'T BE AN IDIOT
| January 27, 2011
We're all idiots when we're 18. We're all idiots for the first half of our 20s, and longer, for some. By saying so, we're not trying to insult anyone.
