Freddie Highmore
Based on the popular children’s-book series and directed by Mark Waters, the film version of
The Spiderwick Chronicles
centers on the three Grace siblings and their interactions — some friendly, some potentially deadly — with fairies and goblins. Freddie Highmore plays both of the identical-twin Graces, Jared and Simon (Sarah Bolger is sister Mallory), and he gives them separate identities, Simon nerdy, Jared angry over his parents’ impending divorce. That divorce and, more specifically, the relationships between unreliable fathers and their children play a central role, the Grace kids’ family life overlapping with and echoed by their supernatural adventure. It’s all handled with a deft touch, giving the film a poignance that balances nicely with the PG-level action.

October lite
We expected the vampires, the werewolves, the zombies, and the homicidal maniacs. Same thing with the android doubles, the alien abductors, the sexually abused pregnant teenager, the Apocalypse, and the post-Apocalypse. But kids' movies?

Kirsten Sheridan’s movie is about Music: how Music connects all of us, how Music is everywhere, how all Music is uplifting, dammit, no matter what.
A Good Year
Ridley Scott, modern master of the epic canvas, directs his eye toward a French renaissance piece, revisiting the milieu of his debut feature, 1977’s The Duellists , though the result has more in common with his 2003 effort, Matchstick Men. Watch the trailer for A Good Year (QuickTime)
Untrue north
Just as there are many universes in the world of Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass (published in Great Britain as Northern Lights ), so there are many movies in this New Line adaptation.

Although her film has as much visual flair as an after-school special, director Patricia Rozema gives an appealing attention to period detail, and Breslin is sweet in her first starring role.
REPRISE

Trier captures the moment when the recklessness of youth gives way to adult responsibilities, and the way childhood friendships can fall apart when different paths are taken.
