VIDEO: The trailer for The Children of Huang Shi
Based very loosely on true events, Roger Spottiswoode’s epic tells the story of a cocky and callow young British journalist, George Hogg, who gains in character, and finds himself, by rescuing orphan children during the 1937 invasion of China by Japan. Maybe that’s the stuff of a good movie, but it’s not this draggy, laborious effort, ineptly written and with dull actors in the romantic leads, Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Hogg and Radha Mitchell as a heroic Australian nurse. Nothing helps, neither the gorgeous Chinese locations nor Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun-Fat coasting by as Hogg’s twinkle-in-his-eye partisan pal. 114 minutes | Kendall Square
